The kids don't know how to answer questions.
They know what the question is ABOUT. And their responses are ABOUT that. Generally. More or less. Kinda. Sort of.
Their answers usually start with:
- That's when...
- It's about...
- It's like...
- This has to do with...
And then I'm a hard-grader. I don't think so.

I sense some anger :). Take a deep breath, it's over. One of my students said today: "Oh man, and you looked like you would be an easy grader." Well, looks are deceiving I guess. I am taking this as a compliment.
Mind you, the same person wrote: "A president is directly elected by the monarch. Like Tony Blair and the Queen."
hehehe...picture the Queen thinking...hmmm, this Tony guy is kind of hot. Let him be the PM. ;)
Better yet, make him president :)
I was teaching in grad school up there many years ago. My department head calls me into his office one day and says he got a call from the Dean of Students that his son had been in my class and really enjoyed it, and liked my teaching.
So, he tells me, he pulled the grades for the class to see what I gave the kid. It was a D. He wanted to know how I could give a kid a D and still have him like the class enough to pass on a compliment about me to his father. :-)
i am always pleasantly surprised when they can actually separate their own performance from their evalualation of the course. most liberal arts kids can't really do that, i don't think. they take their education for granted. many of students here work more than one job to support themselves. that really puts things into perspective, i think. they know that because of their schedules, they can't do as well as they could. at the same time, they have an appreciation for the education they are getting. i think that state schools and the students who attend them are extremely underestimated.
All that being said, idiots are idiots...anywhere you go.
