He Said, She Said: Porn
To be honest, I don't find porn immediately erotic or stimulating. I kind of remember someone telling me that men are more easily visually stimulated than women...but that could be a myth, I don't know. However, I think porn does people good in that it can be very educational and could spare us a lot of potentially embarrassing situations. To be a good sexual partner, one needs to know their partner's and their own anatomy pretty well. There's only so much one can learn from printed material or from masturbating. Porn takes care of that problem like nothing else. Seriously, I think that a lot of guys out there have no idea where a woman's clit is. That's understandable. A lot of women don't know where their clit is either. Yet, whoever told you that's not a big deal was trying to be polite. So, if you don't know or you are not sure, you should promptly get yourself a tape and take notice. Same thing for all kinds of anatomical issues: where things are and what feels good, and the like.
Another way in which porn is super-useful is to allow you to explore some of your sexual fantasies and get the basics down before you talk to your partner about it. I, for example, have always wondered about role-playing. I simply don't understand what the appeal is. You dress up. Your partner dresses up. You pretend you're somebody else. What?! Seriously, I don't get it at all. But, maybe, if I see a role-play video, I might change my mind. I might decide that it is actually pretty exciting. And who knows, at some point I might even try it out because having seen it once would have me somewhat prepared for it and I wouldn't feel as weird or awkward as I would otherwise. Also, I really have no clue how creative porn actually gets, but I can imagine it being a how-to manual of sorts. You know...new positions, new ideas, novel ways of doing things, all kinds of good stuff.
All that being said, I think that there is one thing that porn does plain wrong and hurts everyone who might be watching: the pace of it. Things just happen too damn fast. I know it's fiction and people are not supposed to take it all literally. But many people do, you know. In the great world of porn, everybody is permanently horny and women come on demand, every single time, 3 minutes into it. Well, it just doesn't happen THAT fast. Lots of people have even argued that sex in porn is not the kind of sex that women enjoy, but I don't think I want to get into this here and now...Maybe another time.
What do you people think?
P.S. Hope no under-age kids are reading this. I thought I'd soften things up a little bit, but I think sex is a serious thing and therefore, sex-related stuff need to be called with their real names. So...please accept my sincere apologies if this entry has offended you in any way. It's only one very small side of a multi-sided story.

хубаво казано, но защо не на български
мииии...дълга история...но в момента обмислям кога и по какъв начин да започна да пиша и на български. или нов блог, или 'И на български'...или...ако имаш идеи казвай! :)
I agree about the pace. Sometimes I see too much pain rather than pleasure written on women's faces in porn films(not talking about S&M). Hopefully people wouldn't imitate such attitude towards the partner.
Yesterday at a party a friend of mine was interviewing us on the topic:
Men like porn films with homosexual women(opposite sex).
Women don't like porn films with homosexual men(opposite sex). Why so?
Nice topic for a party, what? ;>)
Besides learning some mechanics, one can also learn something about the surprising variety of sexual behaviour in, of the ways that sexual desire is manifested by, and the sexual imagination of,humans.
There are people out there who are stimulated by things that, paraphrasing the words of the old song, "make me go hmmm". Not stimulated, not disgusted, just...puzzled. One learns more not just about humans in general, but perhaps about oneself.
Since porn is produced for purely commercial purposes - titillation in exchange for money - pace is subordinate to the end product of stimulation. There are cheap devices used in non-porn story-telling too. For example, the use of a GPS tracking device inside the Louvre in the early part of the novel "The DaVinci Code", for example, even though a GPS unit does not work indoors. But I think you're concern is that a porn user may mis-learn.
A difficult subject, with many possibly tangential subjects - psychology and politcs among them. Stuff of PHDs.
niki, what kinds of conclusions did you guys come up with. i am willing to agree that it's a pretty much accurate observation but can't think of reasons why...
sonyphone, you are totally right. porn is one of those subjects that hide an endless set of possible conversation (or, for that matter, dissertation) topics. but this paragraph:
"There are people out there who are stimulated by things that, paraphrasing the words of the old song, "make me go hmmm". Not stimulated, not disgusted, just...puzzled. One learns more not just about humans in general, but perhaps about oneself."
perfectly describes how I feel about it.
The keyword was aesthetics. The ladies
found it hard to explain though. Peculiar situation. Maybe some "hard talk" is needed,or?;)
see, i don't buy this argument...that female bodies are more attractive to look at. we need to come up with a better explanation. i'm thinking about it.

..ok, lets try again..
i have an opinion about porn, which is in general positive, excluding the propagation of some misunderstandings regarding all the things a woman would readily let herself be done to in a total lack of real intimacy..as far as homosexual sex being the party topic, a two-fold comment: not all women dont enjoy male homosexual sex (http://girlwithaonetrackmind.blogspot.com/2005/05/domestic.html) and if we turn the question around - why do women not mind porn with homosexual women, while all my guy friends (except the gay ones) are horrified, appalled and in general feel threatened by the occasional man-on-man action on adult entertainment tv?
i too don't like homosexual porn. the one with guys. the one with guys because i see women to be the object of grace, beauty, and etc. but as general i don't like neither man, neither woman gay action on tape. i've explained this to myself(at least), with the fact that i'm excluded of the action. men... :) i mean i can't get turned on or like something, i couldn't be part of :) it's kinda egoistic, but it's a fact. and for the guy gay thing, i even don't wanna be a part of it, so that's again out of my too-see list.
niki, kali, and z-
it seems to me that it comes down to why you are watching porn to begin with. z's comment reflects that one line i had in the original entry, about men being more affected by visual stimulation than women. but more generally, if men and women are watching porn for different reasons, then we shouldn't be surpirsed if men and women have different opinions on what kind of porn is good or bad. after talking to my female friends about it, it seems to me that women are more analytical when they watch porn. my entry and the women's comments on peio's blog are both a good example of that. men, on the other hand, seem to be watching for the purposes of getting some physical (or whatever) pleasure out of it. in the case of gay-porn, i personally feel like both female and male gay porn could be an equally enlightening and educational experience. even though i am not gay, i can still find it interesting on any number of levels. if you are a heterosexual guy, however, and watch porn to get turned on, male gay porn simply does not apply. lesbian porn, on the other hand, is still enjoyable because women in gereral get you excited.
again, this is all pure speculation. please keep this conversation going!!!
There are differences in the types of homosexual porn that do speak to the differences. I believe they rented gay porn on one sex and the city episode because it was animalistic and passionate in its settings. Lesbian porn however includes more eye contact, connection building, setting, etc. I could be wrong its been quite a while since I was in the market for porn...
This could show that both men and women can be visually stimulated just perhaps through different mechanisms.
And yes, I did just cite sex and the city as a source.
hhaha, steve! i dare you to work a sex and the city reference into your Master's defense! ;P
Well done!
