Feminists, whores, and princesses
- the feminist: men-hating, self-hating, unattractive, delusional, arrogant
- the whore: fucks with no feelings attached, was probably abused by her parents, comes from a modest background, fucks for money
- the princess: comes from good family background, enjoys luxury, shallow and superficial
I don’t even know how to begin to explain what’s wrong with this picture, but two major things immediately come to mind:
1: Fucking grow up and find another go-to subject when you feel you’re starting to run out of ideas for articles. I swear, every time I see a vulgarity-ridden text about male-female relations I simply want to throw up. I obviously have no particular problems with obscenity nor do I have a mental list of things one should never talk about in public. I simply hate anything which reflects a choice of form over substance: the same way I hate flashed-out corporate websites, bad movies with awesome trailers, etc. etc. I understand how Bulgarian journalists would want to write about stuff like that back in the early 90s, when we first discovered the freedom to talk about sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll without being censured. I also understand how that type of writing is a way of subverting the patriarchal norms of a traditional society like the one we live in here in Bulgaria. Yet, replacing one set of stereotypes (women are emotional, motherly, don’t care about sex as much as men) with another (women are whores, gold-digging, manipulating) is of no particular use to anyone.
2: Writing in terms of categories has already been done, many times over. By social scientists and psychoanalysts at the turn of the century. That’s the turn of the 20th century. Which was more than 100 years ago. Contemporary social scientists, psychoanalysts and people capable of independent brain-work, however, have long agreed that speaking in types is pointless to say the least.

I had decided that I would no longer write about gender issues here, given the fact that my feminism has produced more personal drama than anything else that I care about. But the more I think about it, the more I realize that my own little battle against ridiculous stereotypes of being and behavior has not even begun. Please, give this text a generous read and do not think of it as militant. All I am trying to say is that it hurts my soul to see smart people say stupid things.

Are these stereotypes used across print media in general, or are certain publications more apt to do this? And if the latter, which ones in particular?
I ask out of curiosity about Bulgarian media. I can only read SNA, Standart, Sofia Echo, and know nothing about the main newspapers and magazines.
That's a very good question. I think that the stereotypes ARE used across publications (electronic media too). The particular publications I had in mind were so called 'lifestyle' magazines that supposedly target younger, more educated, more affluent audiences. Which, of course, is yet another reason to be particularly disappointed with them. I don't expect more mainstream, traditional-type publications not to act steretypically. In general, they are more conservative and cater to conservative audiences. However, when self-proclaimed progressive publications do that...well, you MUST blog about it ;)
I think you're aging prematurely! :-) The older I get, the more I become aware of the steady repetition of the same stories in the media over and over again. They're either based on annual events ("It's hot again") or stereotypes ("Beware of MySpace"). The farther the media gets from breaking news, the more it relies on being buzzword-compliant and content-free.
The Bulgarian media just seems to have gotten there faster than the rest of the world ;-)
Dude, seriously! They should list this as yet another reason why Bulgaria is ready to join the EU: Bulgarian media meets international standards of crappiness. :)
Doesn't it suck that when you are saying something so sensible that you have to apologize for it and ask people to give it a "generous read"? Or that it causes drama?
Thanks Sally! I hope that what I say does make sense. And, actually, I beat myself for apologizing too much (stereotypical female behavior, isn't it? ;) Yet, I don't want my text to be dismissed simply because somebody thinks of it as yet another crazy feminist rant. Am I supposed to add a glossary of the terms I work with to make sure people understand that my feminism has nothing to do with men-hating and bra-burning?!
Above all, however, I don't understand why anything that a woman says in opposition to stereotypical and prejudiced behavior has to be dubbed feminism?! Isn't it just...well...thinking?!
i appologize too much too :)
i've given up those so called "lifestyle" magazines, cause actually they pretend to be so much, but offer so little. i'm not pleased neither with the quality of the writing in there, nor with the topics as an overall. they just wanna play pretencious so they sell more throughout the fashionista public, to whom as you know, you're not a human if you don't own exhibit a and b and if you're not up to date with the propaganda lifestyle. sick. blah.
but however the things i said may be stereotyping too. the thing is we can't fully escape stereotypes, it's in human nature and the way we perceive first or second hand information for the uknown people around us. but we sure as hell should try not to enforce social or racial or gender or whatever general stereotypes that are harmful and vile.
Z: I totally agree. Everything you say is true not only about Bulgarian lifestyle magazines but about such magazines in general. They do seem to encourage a lifestyle that seems unachiavable to most of us. That, I think, is only fair given the fact that they survive on ad-money. At the same time, however, they have a social responsibility but also an opportunity to educate or introduce alternative lifestyles and viewpoints. As readers who contribute to the paycheck of their editors, I think we also should have the right to demand nothing but the best they are capable of.
i don't buy their crap anymore. i'm tired of the way they dismiss critique and ridicule it. you know in the "egoist" tone that caught up to everyone else on that "scene".
ok, but at least admit that is more than funny to watch all these women trying to fit in the propagandated stereotypes.
On the word lifestyle (and such magazines), there was an interesting commentary about it on Fresh Air with Terry Gross that may be of some interest
z: I think EGOIST has done a lot for Bulgarian popculture and for that reason I do not want to be too quick to dismiss it. Same applies to other magazines too. For that very same reason, however, I am not willing to be too forgiving. They HAVE shown that they are capable of great work.
anonymous: It is indeed interesting. However, I think it is more dangerous than interesting.
sally: thanks for the reference. i'll check it out. :)
Yes, EGOIST have done a lot. But as a cumulative body of people, that no longer exists as a whole. The current form of EGOIST is something totally different from what it was and how it perceived itself. The current state of affairs is this, as I see it, stare at us with awe, cause once upon a time, people made EGOIST stand out. I can't buy that authoritarian crap.
A long time ago, it was a different situation.
Point taken. I hope they manage to recruit more talented authors. I'm tired of Karbovski's crap, which actually is a story of its own.
You still stay politically correct in your text. This is so "féminin". ...
Dude! I KNOW! I keep telling myself that I need to stop apologizing for my opinions. And believe me, I've made a lot of progress in the last couple of years. But it is SOOO hard to just stop. Kisses!
Black people walk like this, but white people walk like that. Women like to talk on the phone, but men like to burp and drink beer.
Light-hearted oppression sucks. I think there needs to be a whole lot more white-man-hating.
I had decided that I would no longer write about gender issues here, given the fact that my feminism has produced more personal drama than anything else that I care about.
Geez - me too! I used to write about feminism and women's issues a lot... but the only times I got heavily flamed (often by people who said really scary and offensive things) were when I wrote about such issues. At one point there was an enormous thread on some forum discussing what a horrible person i am! I don't feel that I ever wrote about anything that isn't sane common sense, but apparently people get all freaked out when you start using the Evil F Word. blah.
Andrew: Seriously! It almost feels like a waste of time to make arguments against typecasting. It is so trivially offensive that it's not even interesting to object against it anymore. I've been thinking...can't they come up with something else to be a jackass about?
Jane: You should save the threads, archive them somehow and years from now show your kids that you were radical enough to have a haters' club dedicated to you. They would think you're the coolest! :)
