HELLO! THANK YOU FOR STOPPING BY.
My name is Petya and this place has been my true love since January of 2002 when I thought that I wanted to illustrate children's books for a living. I used to draw little girls with BIG heads. Hence the name of the site.
Since its very inception, the website has been hosted by, Dan of waferbaby.com. Dan is single-handedly responsible for my addiction to all things blog. It all started when he made the seemingly innocent suggestion that if I want to have a website, I might want to learn a little bit of html. And for that, I will love him forever.
After a seven-year whirlwind of adventures in the United States, I moved back to Bulgaria where I now live with my wonderful husband. If you ever see a spastic Bulgarian girl and a skinny American boy taking jumping pictures of each other you should know it's probably the two of us and should definitely come by and say hi.
Thank you for taking interest in my life. And please say hi when you get a chance! That would totally make my day!

um, for those of us not in bulgaria, what did they do to cause such a reaction?
Yo, please come back to see Big Brother in action in Pond. It's worse, I promise. Especially since Kanisha and I now have a strategically placed office - P.J.'s old office across from ... the men's bathroom.
Мдам. Никой не очакваше.
Have mercy, please. Грехота е така.
jane, in this case the reaction is way more important than the actual cause
Jane: Just to give you an idea:
Contestant No.1: An 57-year-old lady who's been cast for the show because she is: a) OLD and b) FAT. The show host keeps reminding you that the entire time.
Contestant No.2: A guy who says he would never touch a homosexual person and would never eat at the same table with a turkish person.
Contestant No.3: A boy who looks a lot like a girl (even though he self-identifies as a boy). His first mission from Big Brother is to pretend he's a girl for the first week of the show. He is supposedly being helped by an Armenian gay guy who used to be a drag-queen.
Need I say more?! I've never watched Big Brother and I guess that's why I was so shocked by it all. I also know that the producers are always trying to be scandelous with the casting. But I thought that whatever they did, they would be respectful of their cast and that cast-members would be respectful of themselves. I guess I was too naive.
Elena:
What's so bad about that?! The bathroom doesn't smell, does it?!
Vanina:
Кое е грехота според теб? Да не гледаме предаването или да се възмущаваме от него?
Anonymous:
I am not sure what you mean. As I mentioned in my previous entry, I wasn't going to talk about my reaction to the show but it was so severely the opposite of what I had expected that I had to say SOMETHING!
to me the whole programme was like "self-respect?!anybody?!somebody?!"
I KNOW! I keep blaming the producers but then again, all these people have watched the show before and have enlisted themselves voluntarily...Gross, gross.
No, it does not smell. But everyone who feels the need to go there, also feels the need to stop by and check on us.
As to the show, I am honestly surprised that you are surprised. Clearly, I can't speak directly to this particular show, because I have not seen it; but I do believe that in many ways this type of reality TV draws upon social problems that have few other outlets of expression. Would you not agree that all 3 contestants that you have described represent chunks of BG reality, much larger than an N of 1? The old fat woman, with virtually 0 chances of a professional career exactly because she is old and fat and badly educated and that's what any employer would see in her. The homophobic racist guy who goes out and votes for neo-Nazi nationalists (at least 7% did last time!). The gay person that gets to pretend. You get my point.
that was precisely my point. OF COURSE, these are real people with real issues. i was objecting to the ways in which they are being exploited by the show producers. oh, god, i hope i did not leave you with the impression that i am objecting to the lifestyle choices of the contestants. to the contrary!
girl, of all the people I "know" you exhibit one of the highest potentials for setting yourself for disappointment. Maybe it is because of your incessant optimism and inherent goodheartedness. But to "set up a camp in front of the TV" in wait for BBB, that's certainly pushing it too far.:) I've never watched Big Brother either, but this is a mistake you only make once. Now you will be emotionally scarred for the rest of your life :)).
Now let's hope you wouldn't treat this Hobbesian display of people in their state of nature with the morbid fascination of reading blogs whose authors you hate. meaning, next time the show is on, stay away from your TV set.
Petya and Elena mentioned something about "real issues" and "real people"... mmm I do not think these are exactly real, more likely – hyper-real (you know what I mean :)). They are too much into their "social roles" ("" means 'made up, pretentious') that it leaves the really bad taste of Kitsch and overacting… and bad directing, of course! :)
I see Dimiter has been brushing up on his Baudrillard ;) I agree with him.
Ouch, не видях, че двусмислено се е получило. Имах предвид, че е грехота да ни предлагат such a reality, обръщах се към продуцентите по принцип, не към теб.
HAHAHAHAHA! concerned!!! if you look closer at the picture from last night, you will see that the book i am holding is actually Rousseau's 2nd Discourse. you are right on!!! after finishing watching the show, i felt this hopeless need to read some Rousseau and be reminded that people are in fact good by nature and that their turning against each other is only the product of being a part of contemporary society. Prof. Grady was wondering whether anyone would notice...
dimiter:
i completely agree. i need to be more careful about using 'real' when talking about reality television. what we have here is a bunch of 'real' people placed in a hyper-stylized/'unreal' environment. there's hardly anything real about that and we can't really blame them for trying to fullfill cliched social stereotypes. what i meant was that the people are 'real' in the sense of having hearts and soles and issues and insecurities...
vanina: спокойно. мисля, че целия ден е леко двусмислен. ще се оправим :)
I guess I wanted to explain myself a bit more. I did not misunderstand you, Petya, and I agree with you. But I differ in that I find it normal and OK for a reality TV show to be grotesque. It's TV, it's a show.
Unfortunately, some of the other ugliness that surrounds us on a daily basis is not, but we rarely get shocked by it or even think about it. Unlike the show, which is easier to digest and get upset by. It's a contained, closed environment and I personally find it simpler to get angry about things when I can break them down to concrete, small situations. Kitsch, tastelessness, and yuckiness on a small scale are annoying and you can get mad; on a large scale, they are disempowering and overwhelming.
To give you a favorite example of mine from political psychology: if you know your neighbor locks his wife up on election day, you get mad, you despise him and you think it's disgustingly wrong. It might even motivate you to talk to him, to report him, "to take political action". At the same time, you might know that women in a whole region of the world do not even count as voters, but it can't move you emotionally in the same way; you still hate it, just not so personally and intensely. You would probably never even think to sign a petition, what is the point anyway. The personification of ugly reality only makes it easier to see, not worse than it is. I hope this makes sense. And "you" is used impersonally, just to clarify my clumsy example :)
As to self-respect: everyone is free to make their life choices.
freak show par excellance. trash tv at its best. prime time assault: now touch the screen! amen. ;]
Elena, thanks for the note.
I think I owe an explanation. Will do that soon enough.
c_z: heehehe...seriously!
Prof. Grady was wondering whether anyone would notice...
Didn't see this until today, but I was looking at the picture and suddenly realized you were holding Rousseau and I thought to myself "Well, that's strangely fitting." I was all excited to leave a comment about it, but you beat me to it.
Funny, no? I cropped it out on purpose...thought it would appear too dorky or whatever. But, I swear, reaching for that book felt almost instinctual. Don't know what to think of that, really.
Good job for noticing!!! :D
