Reality TV heaven

Recently I've been worrying a lot about starting to fall out of touch with American pop culture. Britney had her second baby boy and I only found out like FOUR DAYS LATER!!!!! Not to mention that I didn't find out what his name was until yesterday!!! Then, last night I read an interview with her in which she said that she couldn't wait to get back in shape and I peed in my pants a little. I was THAT excited! Can't wait to see those abs again!

BUT, don't worry about me. I will be able to get my celebrity-reality-tv fix even miles away from the States. I am rushing home in a little bit to make myself a quick dinner and set up camp in front of the TV. The third season of Big Brother (Bulgaria) opens tonight and I'm so excited you have no idea. Not that I expect to like it. To the contrary. I've always thought the show was a bit trashy and I don't expect to be proven wrong this time around. Yet, for the first time since 1999, I am home and will be a first-hand witness to a pop-cultural event of such magnitude. Until now, I have always observed those kinds of things from afar. To make things even more delightful, the first installment of Survivor-Bulgaria starts on Wednesday. Am I in reality television heaven or what?!

I am not sure I will comment on either of the above mentioned shows here. After all, everybody and their mother will be talking about them...so why bother. However, I do promise you to follow the Britney's getting-back-in-shape newsline because, seriously, who doesn't want to see her (oops!) do it again?!

petya, well you know i am a reality-TV fan... so i won't even attempt any justifications for this guilty pleasure. i'm just wondering if you have heard that this season'e version of Surivor (USA) has the tribes divided by "race." i say "race" despite the fact that the commercials for the show (and the show itself) constantly insists that they are divided by "ethnicity"--whatever that means. there are four tribes: "white", "african-america", "asian", and "latino."
-----
i think it's such an interesting commentary on the way that Americans still don't know how to think (or talk) about race. only one of the tribes (the "white" one) really uses a properly "racial" category. the "african-american" is just the current PC version of "black." and the other two "asian" and "latino" are even more complicated-- one is a broad geographical desgination that we still implcitly understand as a racial, and the other is really a linguistic/cultural designation that we also implicitly understand as racial. the really amibigious issue is in the "latino" tribe, which is almost exclusively made up of "white" latinos, thus unintentionally revealing a common prejudice and presupposition of the amreican racial taxonomy.---------
a couple of other things that i find interesting about the way they split up the tribes... every tribe has 5 members, but the "white" and "asian" tribes are constitued by 3 men and 2 women, while the "latino" and "black"--ummm, i mean "african-america"--tribes are consituted by 3 women and 2 men. i mean, who are the people behind the scenes at Survivor who are in charge of this? isn't there anyone there who knows anything about current critical race theory? why the decision to "feminize" the latinos and the blacks?

argh!!!!!!!!!!!
