Smoke free
That morning, I was half way through my first cigarette for the day when I said: I don't feel like smoking anymore. Put out the cigarette and the pack in the trash and that was it. No 'I'm-doing-it-my-way' this time. Simply stopped.
It would be a lie if I said that I don't ever think about smoking. To the contrary. I think about it a lot. I just don't do it. And it's not that difficult. Just a little weird. But I've survived the hardest thing: I made it through several intense bar-visits and came through even stronger! Not smoking is the new smoking (for me, anyway).
To be honest, I'm a little disappointed by the fact that I have not felt significantly BETTER. I don't think I sleep better. I don't think my skin is nicer nor am I capable (or willing) of running for miles. But I know that it is the smart thing to do. And it does make me feel so happy to know that I am being a responsible human being and that I am taking good care of myself. Every time I walk into a restaurant and I am asked where I want to be seated, I say as loud as I can: NO SMOKING, PUHLEASE!!!!! Then I laugh out loud.
Waitresses look at me like I am crazy. I bet that as soon as they see me come in, they elbow their co-worker and whisper: there goes the crazy girl who doesn't smoke. But it is a strangely liberating experience and I do intend to enjoy it as fully as I can.

same thing here.
however, it gets really confusing when someone asks me if I smoke...I go "No, I quit...I mean...I don`t smoke. I used to...but not anymore..." etc.
"quit" just feels weird.
So lately, I just say "no" , so that it doesn`t bring up the whole how-did-you-do-it-exclamation-mark subject.
yeah. the best is when someone asks if you have a light and you remember to answer: no, i don't smoke.
hmmm
i don't smoke, but i do have a lighter with me most of the time. it's just a convenient tool pretty often, but sometimes it can be used to help pretty girls light their cigarettes. yeah. there. ;)
that makes a lot of sense! :D
smoking is the perfect conversation starter. :)
OMG, явно е епидемия!!! Аз спрях за седмица, после реших, че всъщност обичам да пуша и се отказах от отказването.
I am a happy person now.
Oh no! The tobacco industry has totally brainwashed you! They have actually managed to convince you you enjoy smoking? Do you really?! Don't you think it smells bad and tastes even worse?!
i can't actually say what's the good side of stopping, cause i've never started on the first place. but judging by my parents, the advantages are on the long term. at first when they stopped they felt very bad and actually regretted stopping smoking but stubbornly continued not to smoke. a couple of months later they started seein the difference in everything they did.
another advantage of not-smoking is that usually in restaurants the places for non-smokers are always free :)
i personally eagerly await the day when in every bar, disco, or whatever, smoking is prohibited. it will be very nice to go have some fun in a club and then return not-soaked in this horrible smoke stench.
when did your parents quit smoking? what kind of long-term effects are you talking about? hope you don't mind, just curious.
i never liked smokey bars even when i did smoke. AND waking up with smokey hair is probably worse than drinking a bit too much.
Good news:)-not bad!
Fighting the habbits. Hard.
Some people stop after seeing x-ray photo of their lungs(most of them just for a while), others after heart attack. Depends. Some people do not want to quit. Freedom of choice. I just hope that they do not smoke in the presense of nonsmokers.
Well my father said that he got tired easier when he had smoked, he also thinks he has a better sleep now. That's what he has told me. There's probably some possitive effect on the mouth cavity :) and on the budget :)
Oh and yeah, it's almost three years now since they stopped smoking.
And I just remembered a curious experience I had.
I was walking one day in Sofia around 8pm o'clock, when I meet a group of 3 guys. One of them comes to me and asks for a cigarette. I answer briefly that I don't smoke. You should've seen the insulted look on his face and you should've hear the insult that he uttered before he went away to his pals.
It's not polite to be a non-smoker! :)
there where some immediate benefits for me after quitting. food tasted better. when i was a smoker my breath was often labored upon waking. that stopped quickly. i smoked for the better part of 15 years or so.
i now get satisfaction because i managed to quit, because the 7 dwarves no longer profit from me damaging my health and fowling the atmosphere, because i'm no longer a slave to that addiction, because i haven't spent thousands of dollars on cigarettes since quitting. i'm sure that had i not quit, i would not be as healthy as i am.
my mother's brother managed to quit about 10 years ago - after one of his friends got a diagnosis of lung cancer. even so, my uncle got the same diagnosis 7 or so years ago. had a portion of one lung removed and has been on an expensive regime of drugs since. the operation left him with chronic pain. he had to stop doing alot of things that he liked to do.
my mother has smoked for more than 50 years. she has had emphysema for a few years now. she has to use a prescription inhaler three time a day, every day. she can barely walk 100 ft without stopping to lean on something to catch her breath.
a cigarette is only good for satisfying a craving, making a profit, or collecting tax revenue.

thank you all for posting. your comments make it perfectly clear that people both smoke and quit for different reasons.
also, i know that one cannot be held perfectly responsible over the reasons they started smoking. nobody begins smoking thinking, ok, i will light up my first cigarette, get addicted slowly but surely and hopefully, die a painful death. what we CAN do, however, is help people realize that the myth that smoking helps you relax, or that it is enjoyable, or that it tastes good is just that: A MYTH.
MUCH easier said than done. i know!
Ok, got me here. I admit: smells bad, tastes bad and yet - feels good.
inks: replace smoking with a healthier feel-good habit. like...yoga, for example. my personal replacement: significant increase in caffeine intake. :)
Nah, no thanx. I'm still young and stupid so I think I'll just keep smoking :D
Heheh...well...you're in the right place, then. Bulgaria must be the most smoker-friendly country in the world. ;)
