There's always a first time
That little exchange made me think about the first blogs that I ever read and the impressions they left me with.
1. Waferbaby:
The first time I visited the site, Dan's Head Project was in full swing. He was encouraging people to take pictures of their heads and email them to him. He would then post the picture along with the name, age, and location of its owner. I had never seen anything like that before. Not only did that guy have a cool website but also, he was willing to share it with others like me. It completely blew me away. So much so, that I got in touch with him. The rest of it is history and you can read more about it in this site's sidebar.
2. Maganda:
She was talking about little things. Like little conversations she overheard on the street. Or bacon. Her life was exactly what I had hoped my own life would be when I grew up. Small but meaninful. No riches. No glory. No famous people in my address book. But beautiful and very peaceful. I still read her site religiously.
3. Dooce:
My first reading of her site was accompanied by LOUD laughter and lots and lots and lots of giggles. It provoked several text-messages and a solemn vow to go to California...SOME DAY, SOMEHOW. The woman was FUNNY! At the same time, there was a purpose to her writing and actual reasoning behind her sarcasm. It has been a total riot to continue reading her all these years.
Do you remember the first three blogs you came around? What were your first impressions? Do you still read them?
Let me know. If nothing, I think we all need a break from the previous conversation anyway.

i think i have told the story already...anyway i was googling Spanish philosophy in Bulgarian 3 years ago just to land in the hands of the Lazy Bastard (http://mchell.cult.bg/blog). it got me hooked up, and actually lead me to your blog, as second on the list, after Georgi suggested i read into you for comparative analysis of bulgarian life in american educational institutions and beyond :) i think afterwards i nostalgically dug deeper into www.cult.bg as third...it has been downhill from there, with loads of blog promiscuity and inconsistency, but i still check up on you every day :)
And it continues to be extremely flattering to have you as one of the regulars. ;)
I think that Var has contributed tremendously to popularizing weblogs among Bulgarian audiences. And in a way because of that he has been one of my initial 'connections' back to Bulgaria. Prior to discovering Bulgarian weblogs, I felt very much out of touch with what was happening here and I missed it immensely...
I can't remember the first blogs I ever started reading. I've had mine for just over five years now, and things are a little blurry.
I used to read Wonkette and The Daily Kos obsessively when I worked for the Democratic Party.
Jenn (and everyone, actually):
Which "political" blogs do you follow now?
Found my first three at about the same time. You know them.
SofiaSideshow
JRank seemed pretty well integrated into Sofia life for an expat and I enjoyed reading about his experiences there. I liked the photos from around the city, too. My interest was in what he published about Bulgaria, and not in what he wrote about the film work that he was doing or about his politics.
Alaskan Bulgarian
The Peace Corp Volunteer Rob Young used to write about his life in Silistra. Yet more personal observations from an expats' life in Bulgaria. His "Long Break" from blogging continues.
bighead: where coffee, politics, and lipstick get equal consideration
A twist on the expat/Bulgaria theme ,Petya was an undergrad in the US when I found her blog and read through most of it in one go, looking especially for posts having to do with Bulgaria. One of her archived posts was about the time a middle-aged man on a Sofia street corner made her an offer she could most definately refuse (I don't remember, was it 10 leva or so?) Good stuff! I left my first comment on Petya's blog and, if I remember correctly, I think it caused a bit of a kerfuffle.
Of course her blog is not about Bulgaria per se, but she's good company and yes, I still read her blog.

hahahhaha! i remember that particular incident! dude! that was NOT funny! :D
i appreciate your sticking around. :)))
I don't really read political blogs much anymore. I still stop by Wonkette every now and again because she's pretty funny, but that's about it.
Most of the blogs I read are on livejournal nowadays (simply for the fact that I can collect them all on one page). The exceptions are you, Sally, my cousin Em, and sometimes Elena, even though I don't speak Bulgarian.
That's interesting. I have also stopped following political blogs on a regular basis. Wonkette IS funny...but still, I don't read it nearly as often as I used to.
By the way, if the difficulty of 'collecting' blogs is keeping you from reading outside of livejournal, you should simply create an account with BLOGLINES. That's the RSS-reader I use and have been pretty happy with it so far.
while i'm not sure what the first blog i ever read regularly was, yours was definitely one of the firsts. it may have been THE first, although i don't remember. this one WAS the one that inspired me to start blogging in the first place though :-)
jane, that's very very flattering! isn't it amazing how fulfilling blogging can be?!
