Happy 5
Here's how it works: you think of five good things that happened to you that particular day. They don't have to be BIG MAJOR things. Like most Netage employees could testify, for example, a good cup of coffee is not something one should take for granted. A good conversation over lunch is something you should appreciate. Having a good hair day...well, that really IS a miracle. So...yeah. Make a 5-point list. Write it down. Or just think about it before you go to bed. Try and do that every day until it becomes a habbit.
I started my own happiness journal when I was on the verge of a personal breakdown and I am pretty convinced that I am at the happy place I am right now because of it. It's not that my day-to-day doings changed that much! To the contrary. I simply started noticing the people and things that I had somehow managed to overlook. I'm not suggesting that this is a panacea for all your problems. All I'm saying is that we sometimes tend to lose perspective on things and get bogged down with unimportant details which is at best unnecessary.
My Top 5 good things today:
1. Finding an awesome fountain pen that makes me want to write postcards to all my friends.
2. Realizing my washer was leaking just in time to avoid flooding the kitchen (yet again)
3. Having a good meeting with a very important client (hello d.)
4. Making important wedding decisions with Prof. Grady
5. Not freaking out (work stuff, details don't matter).
What were your top 5 good things today?
Labels: good things

12 Comments:
1. Those olives that taste a little bit like kerosene.
2. There was more hummus left, even though I thought it was all gone.
3. That one sentence I wrote...hot damn!
4. Same as your #4.
5. All the hair that I stuck to my face for that ill-conceived photoshoot washed off pretty easily, and I didn't even get that much of it in my mouth.
Yeah, it was a slow day.
I will write about yesterday, since it's somewhat early in the day today to tell yet.
1. Getting a comment on my blog from a classmate of mine (from the time I lived in Zimbabwe) I hadn't kept in touch with since 1992 (long live Google!)
2. Talking with my sister
3. Thinking about my upcoming trip to the US and what I would like to do there
4. Having the bus arrive half empty as soon as I got to the bus stop
5. Making my choice from a variety of yummy chocolates in the supermarket
From yesterday, too, cuz it's early:
1. Played Wii for the first time with some very cool people. Yay!
2. Came closer to making a real friend here in Ann Arbor.
3. Vacuumed (chores, when they are satisfyingly done, are good things)
4. Didn't cry for the first time in 3 days (it's been a hard week)
5. Fell asleep next to Adam.
Don't remember about yesterday, because it was a while back. I remember the work meeting with Petya though...it saved me. It got one whining woman off of my back. Thank you Petya and team.
I am not saying anything simply because I'm enjoying your Good Thing Lists way too much! Keep them coming!!!!!
1. My first-graders actually quieted down when I told them I had a headache
2. The headache eventually went away
3. Free fried chicken dinner from one of the parents
4. I got to sleep in late and come home from work relatively early
5. My kickass orange coat. It will never stop making me happy
Alright, today!
1. I have a very important appointment with a doctor which I have been looking forward to for weeks.
2. A friend received the book I sent her. I am in the US, she is in Spain.
3. The stuff I am trying to write actually proved to be very fun and not too time consuming.
4. Drove my husband to work and came back accident-free. Also parked quickly and properly.
5. It's Friday.
WOW! This is probably my favorite entry of all times, not because of what I wrote but because of the responses it got! Each one of you made me giggle and now I am actually even more conviced that life is not so much about the BIG victories but about the small everyday celebrations!!!
Should I make the 5 Good Things a regular entry topic, what do you think?
totally!
yes, yes, I agree--if you make it a regular thing, it will also make us pay more attention to the small happy things more often.
ok. i will do this...on a....monthly?! basis?
