Men and their fuckin' socks

I bet you've all noticed that men have a strange fascination with their socks. I fucking swear, I haven't met a man that didn't have an opinion about them. My dad, for example, has never been seen in public wearing white socks, I don't think. That's all alright, I think. In my book, it's far better to be VERY particular about something than have no opinion of your own whatsoever.

Tonight I had dinner with my girlfriends and my friend Doriana told us a story, a TRUE story, mind you, about a man and his socks that I just have to pass on to you all. Here it is:

Doriana's co-worker has a little boy who just recently turned 3 will soon be 5. Several days ago he asked his kindergarten teacher, Miss Vicky, if she would marry him. Miss Vicky kept her cool and told little Damian:

Damian, you first learn to put your own socks on and then I promise to marry you.

Little Damian goes home and spends the entire evening trying to learn how to put his socks on. For some reason (the reason most likely being that he is only 3 years old) he can't figure it out. He does not let that phase him, though. He goes to his mother and says:

Mom, I have changed up my mind about wanting to marry Miss Vicky. I've decided to marry Miss Maria instead. Unlike Miss Vicky, she puts my socks on for me!

***

Usually, when I tell you guys a story, I do so in order to draw some kind of conclusion at the end. This time, however, I would like to ask YOU to do that. What kind of a conclusion are we to draw about men and their socks from the story above?

I suppose I could be considered somewhat obsessive about my socks...thanks for not airing my secrets publicly ;)

I think it makes sense though. The male wardrobe has far fewer components than the female wardrobe, and socks are one of the few year-round articles for us to focus on. Imagine if you had to focus all the energy you get to spread out over jewelry, scarves, decorative belts, purses, etc., into a single item...you'd obsess too!

Maybe it's the 48 hours of travel I'm coming from right now, but writing that comment gave me some serious deja vu! Did I say the same thing back when you posted about men and fashion accessories? I think I need to lie down.

The only (somehow logical) conclusion I can draw from THIS PARTICULAR story, is that, obviously, since little Damian is 3, he will be following the path of least resistance and will "choose" somebody who does not "give him hard time".

As to men and socks, socks are to men what handbags are to women, although much less ostensibly. Since their level of exposure is much lower, many men don't care about them that much, but the ones that do use them as an accessory.

In terms of white socks, it's all about color coordination and the type of shoe you are wearing. Your dad is a wise man for not wearing them in public (I assume he does not wear sneakers either?).

I reckon Paul Wolfowitz is one of the few guys out there who do not obsess over their socks :)))

niki/petya--Re: Paul Wolfowitz, we had a bit of a discussion a month and a half back on my blog, if you are interested in hearing what some people had to say there: http://viajarporviajar.blogspot.com/2007/02/

(I always have to break up the link in 2, sorry)

Re: the Damian story. my conclusion is that men have a way of getting what they want even if the route to getting it sometimes changes.

Re: men and socks in general. I appreciate men who fuss over their socks... there is nothing worse than a man wearing socks with holes in them (Paul Wolfowitz style) or a man wearing socks with Birkenstock sandals (or any sandals for that matter). sends shivers up my spine :)

Smartwool is a brand and a proprietary fabric. It's one of the three companies, that I'm aware of, that offer machine washable wool clothing; the other two being, Ice Breaker, and Ibex. While I have never had any itchy wool, these are uber-soft, softer than any cashmere I've run across. There are a couple of other companies that offer wool, machine washable socks, Bridgdale, Thorlo, and Dalhgren, come to mind. All of these brands are traditionally marketed to the "outdoor" market. None of them compare to Smartwool socks. My insanity runs much deeper than socks.

...I just had no idea they learn sooo early on. Come to thing of it though, my 4-year-old niece made a friend in a cafe two minites after her and her mom had entered. She got a big bar of chocolate and a teddy-bar from him. I wonder what THAT is supposed to make us think...

Jeremy:
I don't think you could possibly imagine how helpful your Smartwool comment has been. I very much appreciate it! :)))))

Well, you could say this is an example of males getting what they want, but on the flip side, it could also be about females setting the bar too far out of reach. The little tike wanted the one teacher, but perhaps she had unreasonable expectations or demands. Maybe he could've been a little more patient, but I suspect he gave a reasonable enough effort in this case. If he'd gotten the darn socks on and come back to her, she likely would've just explained that socks aren't really considered complete until one can lace up the shoes over them (and so on, and so on, proving his love from one task to the next). Good for him, learning early about being teased and moving on. ha
