10 things I miss about the USA
2. Filter coffee that is full of flavor: I’m afraid I could cut someone for a cup of Ben & Jerry’s Costa Rican
3. Garbage chutes
4. Victoria’s Secret catalogue in my mailbox when I least expect it
5. NYLON (hers and his)
6. Half & half
7. Ross: dress for less
8. Not thinking about what I am wearing as much as I do here
9. Fitted sheets
10. Being able to pay my rent (or any of my bills, for that matter) by signing a check and putting it in the mail
Whoever said that life is all about the little things was so amazingly right.

I have lived in the states for pretty much my entire life, and I've never had a garbage chute! Though I did once live an an apartment where I could throw my trash out the window when I got really lazy.
2) They closed the Ben & Jerry's in State College.
3) The only time I had a garbage chute was when I lived in Sweden.
10) How do you pay your bills, then?
jenn: Big, mean looking dudes walk from apartment to apartment with a large bag into which you are expected to put what you owe for rent and other bills. It's a local monthly halloween of sorts :D
You can buy fitted sheets for real cheep in Metro...this info made my return to Bulgaria way easier. I have no idea what a garbage chute is, therefore, I do not miss it. Drip coffee...the worst thing that anybody can drink in any part of the world. Paying your bills by signing a check...somebody really needs to introduce this concept around soon. Oh, and one last thing...you forgot the mint chocolate chip ice-cream, which is the best ever made and I have not been able to find it in BG.
Professor Grady:
Once you live with a garbage chute in your building, you can't do without, I'm telling you!!! :{}
Jenn:
2)OH NOOOOOO! What do you guys DO?!!!
10) There are several things you could do: a) Go to a designated office that collects people's monthly payments. b) Sign up for this Epay.bg system which basically allows you to pay almost all your bills from the same place. c) Pay with you checking card from the ATM With regards to a) The worst option of all...usually long lines of old people who have no regard for personal space b) Not much better than a) given how un-usuable their site is. I've tried to go through the entire registration process so many times and every time I give up. c) OK, I admit I only tried that once...but they lost me in the end. I was required to enter all these individual ID numbers for my separate bills...people were starting to form an angry line behind me...so, I had to give up.
I am lucky that my roommate has been super cool and volunteered to pay our collective bills...He's moving out soon though and I am seriously concerned...
RaBBit:
Don't be rude! It was a perfectly legitimate question.
Anonymous:
Thanks so much for the tip about fitted sheets. You have NO idea how happy that makes me! Mint chocolate chip ice-cream...Don't they have it at Jimmy's?
ALL:
Garbage chutes are common in high-rise apartment buildings and are used to collect all the building's garbage in the one place. Often the bottom end of the chute is placed directly above a large waste receptacle. This makes garbage collection more efficient and hygienic
Things that I miss:
1) Variety of cheap international cuisine--from sushi to thai to ethiopian to indian, etc.
2) Being able to sit alone in a coffeeshop and read, use your laptop, whatever, without people thinking you were weird :)
3)Ditto on the not paying so much attention to how you look point; nice to have that option
4)The more diverse environment--people from different races, countries, etc.
5) Being able to strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere
6) Being able to use a credit card almost anywhere
7) CVS (and similar type pharmacy, cosmetics, etc. stores)
PS. I just came back from spending two weeks in the U.S. and managed to "catch up" on some of the things that I miss :)
You don't have half and half in bulgaria? That's just terrible.
But you do remind me there are things to love about the states, washcloths being at the top of my list.
petya: and the answer is somewhat legitimate... at least for parts of the world further east :) I know for a fact (from an actual Indian financial analyst) that this is precisely how collection agents work in India. They do not have a centralized credit history system, hence there is no way to asses the risk. So when a paying customer turns into a not-so-paying one, the only way to get the money is to well... get the money :)
Denny:
You shouldn't have brought any of these up! My top 10 list just multiplied by 2!!! :((( It's awesome you got a chance to catch up on stuff...
Sally:
Washclothes?! Can't you use just any small towel for that? Please explain!!!
RaBBit:
Ok, ok, ok...Your response does make sense to me, especially in the light of my head-on encounter with Bulgarian bureaucracy earlier today...Will explain in a separate post.
Frendz, I agree with most things Petya and DJ mentioned (well, I’ve neva given much thought about Victoria Secret in my mailbox :). As to Half & Half, I use any of the coffee creamers available in BG and they do just fine. I am an espresso maniac, so I have to say that coffee here suits me. I agree thought that paying bills is sometimes a major hassle. Even worse is when you have to deal with Bulgarian bureaucracy for even the most trivial question. Talking about a pain in the ass. Here are some things I miss about the US:
1) People driving sanely on the streets – that is respecting other people’s right to live.
2) Having a normal attitude in the governmental and educational establishments. In BG by presumption people are plain rude.
3) Clean streets and clean yards. Sometimes Sofia looks like one huge dumpster.
Will blog about this later.
Washcloths are the perfect size for washing the face, and handtowel size is just to big and too much of a bother to get wet for washing just the face, and I've never been able to find a towel smaller than hand-towel size when i've been in Europe.
Sally:
Hand Towel + Scissors = Washcloth
I love this (and the comments, too). You have inspired me to do a list of things I miss about Bulgaria. I posted it here.
Ross and fitted sheets! I miss them too.
Jane, you should ask around. It's really amazing how far some American inventions have travelled...
By the way, have a had a chance to make it to one of Seul's underground designer handbag malls? I had a friend in gradschool who was from Seul and told me about that. Sounds pretty heavenly...
