How to marry a non-Bulgarian
Today I found out that in order for my American husband (the same one I married IN BULGARIA just a little over three months ago) to be allowed to APPLY for a long-term resident visa to Bulgaria, I need to provide him with an official invitation. Silly me, all this time I keep thinking that signing my name under an official marriage certificate is enough of an invitation in itself!...
I swear, when Kyle and I outmaneuver the Bulgarian bureaucracy and convince everyone that it is perfectly ok to let a husband live in the same country as his wife, I will write the most comprehensive guide on how to marry a foreigner in Bulgaria. If today's head-on encounter is any indication, though, it might be a long time before we succeed.

Petya, of course I can't offer any advice, not being Bulgarian, or marrying a foreigner, or anything.
But I did want to pop in to say that you and Kyle are the most adorable couple ever. I hope my fiance and I will have as much fun celebrating our new marriage as you & Kyle seem to have!
Информацията, която мога да ти дам не е много прясна, на 25 години е, но доколкото познавам българските служби е напълно възможно все още да изискват подобни документи. Ще ви трябва декларация за осигуряване на доходи за Кайл, в случай, че се разделите *да не дават светиите*. Най-често се подписва от родителите на партньора или самия партньор, ако е на дългосрочен трудов договор. Иначе ще ви трябват още щатско свидетелство за съдимост, т.е. че не е издирван от органите на реда, а също така и някакъв документ, че няма неплатени сметки към електроразпределителни дружества, например(такива се издават от кредитните институти най-често). Последните две се изискват и като документи при кандидатстване за българско гражданство. Но тогава ще му трябва и тапия за владеене на български език. Съдейки по разказите на майка ми, цялата процедура е била пълен терор...

Well, I married my non-Bulgarian in 2005. We only legalized the marriage in Bulgaria (that is, got a Bulgarian marriage certificate). We once looked at the requirements for long term residency and I remember they were really complicated. And sheesh, I highly doubt that we will live in Bulgaria one day...

I just spoke to the Bulgarian consulate in NY, and it turns out that I don't need a visa! The battle is far from over, I'm sure, but things just got a lot more manageable.

Well, no, of course! Kyle kept calling and they actually kept hanging up. Like, picking up, not saying anything, and hanging up the phone. However, he sent them an email and the General Consul wrote back saying he didn't need a visa.

I think they pick up the phone after 2 pm because before that they work with the clients on site. So from 9 to 2 they do anything to get the phone to stop ringing. But of course recording a message that tells you when to call is way too hard ...
The saga's not even close to being over yet. I will outline the process as soon as we are finished...although I am not willing to commit to a deadline on this one. Something tells me it might be a while.

I'm a white South African male that just married a Bulgarian and we also thought that marriage documents would be enough.
Unfortunately that doesnt seem to be the case. We went to the migration office in Sofia and they told us that I cant apply for residency with a Visa type C. They want me to fly back to South Africa (or any other country outside Bulgaria) and apply for a new visa type with the marriage documents. Problem is that I need a visa for any European country so I have to fly halfway across the world and then apply for a Visa type D.. wait for 2 MONTHS and only then get this damn beaurocracy out of my life.
We tried consulting a lawyer and she said that there was a 50% chance that they'd let me get this ID in Bulgaria without exiting the country. Problem is that laws have changed lately and the people at the migration office say this is virtually impossible.. they even deny people that have children!
If you had any luck please let me know.. otherwise I have to waste 2000 leva flying back home and be away from my wife :/
