Errr...I know this is supposed to be one of the most romantic songs ever written. But to me it sounds mostly like the guy is a fuckin' stalker!

I agree! I even remember hearing that Sting once said in an interview that he doesn't know why people insist on playing it at weddings because it's not romantic.
It's kind of like that song by Clay Aiken about being invisible. Creepy.

Well, in all fairness, the lyrics do eventually change up to "I'll be missing you," rather than "I'll be watching you." That brings down the creepiness quotient just a bit...
Well, I think a lot depends on the singing and the music that goes along with the lyrics. The whole package sets the mood ....
Plus he goes on to say:
"Since you've gone I been lost without a trace

That's romantic in my book.
