How to deal
In the last couple of weeks taxi drivers and sales people here in Sofia have:
1: Rolled their eyes at me
2: Tried to guilt-trip and asked me to apologize
3: Turned their back and walked away from me
Why? Because I could not provide them with exact change.
?!?!!?!
In response I apply old-school techniques I learned when I was in elementary school: look at them straight in the eye and don’t say anything. They huff and puff and eventually hand me my change.
As I walk out, I give them the finger. Fuckin’ assholes.
How do YOU deal?

Wow. Whenever I worked any sort of money-taking job, I HATED when people gave exact change, because that meant it took forever for them to count it out when it would have been faster for me to just give them some change. Plus, it would piss off the people behind them, who would then be rude to me because they assumed that the length of time it took for the exact change person to count the money is my fault. I also associate this practice with old ladies who complain when soup is a penny more than what it was the previous week and who pay for groceries in rolls of quarters.
I usually don't deal with it. I just shrug my shoulders. And if some off them are being real assholes, I usually even lie that I don't have exact change, just to annoy them...with the risk of being given change in coins of one and two stotinkas :)
P.S. Stotinkas..that's always awkward to say :)
As for the taxi drivers- if I know I only have notes of 20s and 50s, I usually tell them so when I get in the car. That way they have enough time to get used to the idea by the time we arrive.
I'll have to try and remember all of this in August....Yeesh!
Sally: Seriously!!! But also, it's not like it's the kind of job where you are surprised when people hand you a cash! THAT's what bothers me the most! Look at all my exclamation marks...can you tell I'm pissed.
Zbrox: I do that too! Also, I LOVE to give them EXACT change. That makes them SOOO mad, they refuse to say good bye ;)
Dima: I sometimes do that too and they are usually nice about it. But is it really necessary to create all these elaborate plans simply for the purpose of getting in cab?

auuuuu i`m as mad as u about this "нямате ли по-дребни?". i haven`t tried your trick yet, but i will definitely. especially in the beginning of their shift. as if they start with nothing but empty wallet. да бе да!
kill the fuckin bastards, бe! they don`t even know how to take your money. what kind of sales people are then? no change and no tip!:D that`s just another example of the Great War of the Clients and the Sales People in Bulgaria.

I usually just refuse to buy whatever it is that I want and on rare ocassions wait for them to go get change next door.

zazie, remember our little "who gave you the permission to move the chair?"-Ugo-waitress experience? :) now that was classy and thinking for the best of the customer!
A few times I told them to fuck off and went to another store. Hasn't happened with a cab driver yet, but I have gotten bullshit from cabbies when I have tried to go to neighborhoods that are "too close" for them. Couple of times I got in the cab and when I told the cabbie where I am going he said he was waiting on a customer. Such a load of shit!
