Just found a fabulous image collection of women in mini skirts from the 60s and 70s.
I love this one particular moment of fashion not so much for its aesthetics but for the sense of fun and freedom it has come to represent. I so wish I could say the same thing about the way women wear clothes today...

Did you notice that almost none of them looks so "skinny" as the nowadays fashion models? The one thing I loved the most is that all women in the pictures look just normal:-)
Absolutely. It's beyond me why so many magazines these days make fashion appear unattainable, when it soooo does not have to be that way.
Thanks a lot for this link :D I love the minis! It just inspired me to go out and by a couple of more skirts, although I have a few already. For me, they never go out of fashion. They're cute and sexy, and still have a certain innocence about them.

the funny thing about them...they are sometimes even more comfortable than longer skirts. nothing to stick to your tights! ;)

the mini is pretty crude really. and rather than innocence, it seems a certain vulgarity. and i love skirts, really. i mean, i don't wear them (for the obvious reasons) but they fascinate me.
nonetheless, the mini is just a radical expression of denial and insubordination, symptomatically related to prudity of sexuality at the time.
Perhaps it would sound cliche, but the mini is rather a power-symbol. Not a symptom of adolescent rebellion but...exactly the opposite, a sign of authority. Women took control of their bodies and exposed exactly how much they felt comfortable exposing. And this, I believe, has little to do with feminism. If anything, the growth of the feminist movement coincided with the subsequent lengthening of hemlines. It does have something to do, however, with women feeling sexually at ease...comfortable with their bodies, with their sexuality, and with their femininity. Minis (especially the more radical micro-skirts) can be cheeky or vulgar, but the mainstream look is simply feminine. And who doesn't like seeing thighs? ;)
