Last night I took a taxi home from work. I was carrying two big boxes AND my purse, AND the latest AMICA, AND a bag of shoes I had picked up from my shoe repairman. I asked the driver if he would take me to my address and he said yeah, sure. I am always careful to ask before I get in because in Sofia you can never know if the driver would be willing to take you wherever it is that you need to go. See, they don’t like driving short distances, they don’t like driving through downtown during rush-hour, they don’t like going to certain neighborhoods because they are poorer and people there never take taxis, etc. etc. Point is: you gotta ask. I asked. He said yeah, sure.

When we got to our building, the meter showed 2.50. I handed him a 10. The driver didn’t have change.

Me: Oh, well, I am sorry. I don’t have a smaller bill. (thinking) A ten is not really a BIG bill, you know.
Driver: Well, I don’t have change.
Me: What are we going to do?
Driver: I don’t know.
Me: It’s late, all shops are closed. I can’t break the bill.
Driver: I guess this ride is on me.
Me: You don’t have to do this. Maybe we can figure out a way for me to pay you back.
Driver: That’s not an option.
Me: Let’s drive back to the supermarket. They are open late.
Driver: I’ve got to be somewhere else.
Me: What are we going to do?
Driver: GET OUT.

Dear Anonymous-Taxi-Driver-who-did-not-take-my-money-and-kicked-me-out-of-your-car, THANK YOU. And fuck you. I was really trying to be accommodating and you...you were just being an ass.
