throughout it there's the hardly concealed message "i've seen SO MUCH better" and by not blaming it on anyone conretely, it sounded as if he takes our entire people to be behind it - with tastelessness and greed and ignorance that ruined any chance for aesthetic beauty (that could come from somewhere other than the mediocre mountain).
i don't usually read such reviews, so maybe it sounds normal, maybe that's the fashion they write in. still, i'd have liked it if there was another reason for them to holiday in bulgaria apart from it being cheap (because of its lower standards).
but the facts were all true. perhaps that's what enrages me.
I actually just got around to reading the article and though some of his complaints are fair, the author sounds like an idiot. Keeping certain areas of a mountain closed during a storm is standard practice at ski areas everywhere. It is done for several reasons, including assuring that the fresh snow can be enjoyed as long as possible and, more importantly, for reasons of avalanche safety.
What was up with him asking "Who brings a laptop to Bulgaria?" What's that supposed to mean. Anyway, I thought it was a pretty terrible article. The point seemed to be: "I'm a fucking awesome snowboarder and this mountain is not big enough for my awesomeness."
As far as I'm concerned, this is good news. Now maybe people like that will go somewhere else instead.
I like the end. "By the time the sky darkened, I'd forgotten all my petty complaints. As I re-emerged from the powder and steered toward one final bombing run down a lift line, I imagined the night ahead: cheap beer, charred beef and a sauna lined with chic black tiles. For the moment, life in Bulgaria was sweet indeed."
I have all sorts of petty complaints about Bulgaria, but I do agree that it can make you forget them sometimes.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I agree with everything you guys say. Also, I am finding it difficult to formulate an opinion of my own.
Like many of you said, I don't necessary disagree with his substantive points...When I go to Bansko, I am bothered by the same things...but also, I take it for what it is...the good, the bad, and the ugly. Ah well, whatevs. I just strongly dislike the way the article was written. Dro, maybe that's sort of what you were getting at. Not like I think that Bulgaria is heaven on Earth but I do think that the guy who wrote the article is a pompous ass. From reading the text, I feel like I learned a lot more about him and his likings than an article about Bansko would require.
And, btw, did anyone else find his excessive usage of the word POWDER a tiny bit annoying?
My name is Petya and this place has been my true love since January of 2002 when I thought that I wanted to illustrate children's books for a living. I used to draw little girls with BIG heads. Hence the name of the site.
Since its very inception, the website has been hosted by, Dan of waferbaby.com. Dan is single-handedly responsible for my addiction to all things blog. It all started when he made the seemingly innocent suggestion that if I want to have a website, I might want to learn a little bit of html. And for that, I will love him forever.
After a seven-year whirlwind of adventures in the United States, I moved back to Bulgaria where I now live with my wonderful husband. If you ever see a spastic Bulgarian girl and a skinny American boy taking jumping pictures of each other you should know it's probably the two of us and should definitely come by and say hi.
Thank you for taking interest in my life. And please say hi when you get a chance! That would totally make my day!

Also, can I point out how tacky it is to pretty much admit to going somewhere because it's cheap, and then complain about how cheap it is?
