A day in the life of...
This week I am realizing that I am not the only one who's being confused by this rather humorous name situation:
Little Krassi: I received an email from a client that was meant for Big Krassi.
Petya: What did you do?
Little Krassi: I emailed the client back and told them: You sent me an email that was meant for Big Krassi.
Petya: What did the client say?
Little Krassi: The client said, Oh! I thought that Big Krassi left Netage.
Petya: What did you say to that?
Little Krassi: I said, No! Big Krassi is still here. Little Tsetso left Bulgaria.
Petya: What did the client say?
Little Krassi: He said, I am happy that at least I sent the email to the correct company.

Rewrite that first paragraph with "Bulgaria" in place of "Netage" and I could have written it. Whenever I'm not sure what someone's name is I just call them Жоро...
hahahaah
and when I'm not sure about someone's name I call them "Гошко":о)
This is a hilarious story, Petya. I was just having a conversation with 2 of my colleagues (who are not from the South) about how in my family, like many Southern families, we use the "Big"/"Little" distinction for relatives who share a name. So "Big Johnny"'s son is "Little Johnny", deapite the fact that "Little Johnny" is, like, almost 60 years old now.
They thought that this was very weird-- and they probably secretly thought it was also "backward" in that way that all Southern things are to non-Southerners. But I said that I didn't see it as any different than when grown men still use "boy" names-- like Johnny for John, or Billy for William, or Andy for Andrew. I mean, I know a lot of men who decided at some point in their lives to drop the diminutive version of their name, but I know just as many who never did.
Also (and sorry for the long comment), speaking of shared-names... when I was at 'Nova (and Kyle can corroborate this story, I'm sure) it seemd like *everyone* shared just a handful of names. In the first class that I TA'ed, I think all the males in the class were either "Matthew", "John" or "Mark." And all the females had Biblical names, too. It was tres confusing. That's when I started to refer to students by their last names-- here at Rhodes, I still do the same thing, only I refer to my students as "Scholar X." Last names are easier to remember than first names.
One last thing... one of my students this semester was "Scholar Darling", which I took endless pleasure in saying.
Dr.j - I love "Scholar Darling"!
Petya - try making friends in Russia. Women are named Elena, Tatyana or Svetlana. Men are either Alexey, Alexander or Sergey. Nobody seems to be bothered by that, they just smile politely when you point out they need some fresh air into naming their kids.
Great post!
Try names in Bahrain: Mohammed, Ali, Hassan, Hussain for boys. For girls there's a bit more variety, but Fatima and Zahra are common names. However, I did have an Egyptian student last year called Pussy. I kid you not. Luckily I discovered she pronounced it Bousy, so I was saved the eternal embarrassment of having to call out 'Pussy' in class.
Hahaha, we have that in my family, too. "Big Tony" and "Little Tony" and the like. :)
my story:
My name is Bilyana. My colleague`s name is Bilyana too. Our agent`s name (from a traveller agency)is also Bilyana. And there is one more person in this story - my crasy ex-boss.
At first the boss asks the other Bilyana to make the reservation for a flight. Half an our later the boss calls me to make a resevation for the same day but for a different fligt EARGENTLY. I call immediatelly.
The other Bilyana doesn`t know about my task, I don`t know about her task.
It hapened that we called our agent Bilyana at the same moment.
----
I: Bilyana is calling from a company YYY.
Agent: I AM talking to Bilyana from YYY company on the other line !!! are you kiddin`?!?!
I: No. We are two Bilyana. i want to make reservation for Ms YYY for the day ... destination Sofia-London departure ....
Agent: BUT I Am making a reservation for Ms....for the day ... destination Sofia-London for an earlier flight!!!
I: I am sure my time is correct.
Agent: I don`t believe you!!
I: Whom I am talking to?
Agent: Bilyana
I: No, what is your name?
Agent : BILIANA!! and please talk to each other in your office and then call me!!!
-------
Later we canceled both reservations - the boss said " she will organise everything heself!!!" :))))
