Money tips and tricks. Seriously.
I have a nasty habit. I am an over-spender!!! I don’t buy big things. I buy hair-clips and sunglasses I never wear and cute little pig figurines because Kyle likes pigs. Elephants too. I also buy more food than I usually need and multiple snacks because I just can’t decide what I would be in the mood for when I actually need a little bite to eat mid-afternoon. I spend a lot on clothes and shoes too. That last part, however, I do not consider a bad habit.
What’s the big deal, you’d ask, you are not buying things you can’t afford. Well…THAT precisely seems to be the problem. I think that if I WERE buying BIG EXPENSIVE EXTRAVAGENT things it would be a bit easier to be in control of myself. But I don’t. I buy a lot of little things that cost close to nothing but eventually do add up. I wouldn’t worry too much about it if I didn’t know better. It’s not that I’m bankrupting myself. I am just WASTING money that I could spend on things that really are important like, say, more shoes.

My newest trick as a chronic over-spender trying to reform is to circle any items in my check book recorded from debit card transactions that are NOT bills or groceries. It's really eye-opening to see how much damage you can do with a movie here, a brunch there, a new purse, etc. My goal isn't to stop doing these things entirely, but rather, to limit how quickly I go through these kinds of activities without stopping to catch up financially.
It's been good for me, because if I am tempted to make an unnecessary purchase, I can flip open my register and see just how much I've spent lately, which makes the potential purchase less justifiable. Not having you or Cristi around has done wonders to my spending habits, too! ;) When we're together, we can justify about anything...

i've started reading some personal finance blogs and the one thing they all seem to emphasize is keeping a detailed track record of what you buy, to the penny.

The advice i try to follow was my grandma`s advice: "If you can save 1 lev - save it" This makes me think about every one lev and do I really need these things and i do reduce my expences.
Also DO NOT USE YOR CREDIT CARD except in case it is really necessary. :)

I think that the money is to spend and not to be saved. Because in our dynamic and changing days of consumption, to save does not mean economise money since on the market appear and appear every day new and new expensive things which could be temptaton and you will finish by buying something expensive without a real cost.
So, the thing is to buy rarely and very expensive: you have satisfaction.
for example instead buying two pairs of middle cost shoes (60-90 euros) by month. I prefer to buy one expensive pair of shoes (300-500 euros). When it is not expensive, I do not buy since I am not satisfied and I will buy another and another. Sounds stupid but this my trick.
The trick is not to say today I will do some shoping and you go out and walk.
You have to do it once per month with a list of three expensive (quality) things and go right in the shop where you can find it. You buy, you go to the bar, you drink a little whiskey and go home to do more important things, like sex, sport,reading, writing.
I am the world's biggest cheapskate. Ask Adam. It's crazy. I treat saving like a game. I'm weird, but I've developed a nice little nest egg because of it. My advice.
1. Oldest advice ever, but pay yourself first. Set it up so that a certain amout each month is automatically withdrawn to a high-yield savings account. I have an ING account that I love because it's not part of my main bank account; as a result, I rarely ever look at it, and it's not linked to a debit card, so it's harder to spend.
2. Take a couple of months and track every penny. Set up a spreadsheet with the major categories (rent, food, gas, extra food (like eating out), clothes, entertainment, etc.). It's amazing how when you see how much money can get sucked into buying coffee everyday, you suddenly feel the need to make your own coffee at work. Doing this will help you visualize where you can maybe curb spending, and where you can't. Use what you see there for writing your budget.
3. I disagree with the advice to not use the credit card. I find that cash is my downfall. I loose track of it too easily. On a credit card, I see the statement each month and know where that money went to. I try to curb the cash by giving myself a limited amount that I can withdraw from my bank account each month.
4. Follow the 60/40 rule. 60% of your expenses should be to your fixed necessities (rent, food, health insurance, etc.). The remaining should be divided into 4 10% chunks for short-term savings, retirement savings, fun money, and monthly variable necessities (say, going to the doctor).
5. In contradiction to my 60/40 advice, I'm never sure about keeping an actual budget. I try to, but I actually find that it makes me feel deprived and I will then compensate and overspend on something. I find it better to track my spending because if I see that I blew $20 a month on coffee, when I could have used the $20 for a nice dinner, then I'm going to decide not to buy coffee the next month. This works better for me than telling myself I can only spend so much a month on something. However, I do think it's worthwhile to budget your fixed monthly expenses like rent, and to budget a certain amount of savings each month.
6. Put a picture of something you really want on your bathroom mirror. Whether it's a trip, or a nice pair of shoes, putting something that I really want motivates me to save more. I think twice about every penny I spend if I know that what I don't spend will go toward my dream item.
That's my advice, but if you only follow one bit, it would be the first suggestion to pay yourself first. If you pretend you don't have it, you won't spend it, so it will stay safe in your bank account.
I forgot to mention gift cards. For things like buying cofee, or a sandwich at my sandwich place that I tend to loose track of, I'll load up a certain amount onto a gift card for the month, and when it's gone, it's gone, and I won't allow myself to spend more. It keeps me from falling into the pit of buying coffee everyday (I seem to be hard on coffee today!)

I do not leave for the grocery store unless I have a list of necessary food items and clear ideas of what I am gonna cook with them. Same with snacks and hygiene/make up.
Should I find myself in a clothes/shoe/tchotcke/jewelery store holding an item that's calling my name I remind myself of the guilt that will take over me five minutes after exiting the store. Nasty feeling it is. I also count how many hours of work I have worked to make money for this item. I ask myself "Do I really really really want it?".
I also reward myself by sitting down biweekly and sending money to our savings account. I like to think about the amount accumulated and the vacation we will take with it and the worries it will save me (like when our shitty car will all of a sudden need a brand new transmission, for example).

petya, we have an easy and ready-to-use excel template for monthly expenditures. we can send it to you whenever you ask for it. it really works and helps us see what we spend money for and how we can optimize our budget so not to feel restricted, and at the same time not to empty our pockets as quickly as a cockroach escapes your slipper :-)

I was a little bit embarrassed to write about this but I figured if I were having these issues, chances were that others have similar troubles too. Hopefully, this can benefit not just me but other people too.
I totally agree with you that the first thing to do is definitely to keep track of your spending because you can't save it if you don't realize you're spending it to begin with.

The actual event that prompted this entry is our trip to Rome in February!!! We are so super excited and have been saving up for it for a little while now. I just felt like if I wrote about this here, I would in a way be making a public committment to be good about my finances and that would help me contribute more to the Rome fund...Sally, that's exactly the kind of thing you had in mind, right? ;)
Exactly, Petya! Good luck saving! Just think that for every coffee you don't buy until your trip, that's one cup of espresso you can be enjoying in some plaza in Rome.
What is wrong with you people? So now Petya and all of us should think twice before we have a cup of coffee? It is ok to know exactly how much money you have in your savings account and how much you have in your wallet, but thinking small is something that i would not advise Petya or any of you to do. Life is too short...
I am careful with my finances and I have rarely had no money in my account at the end of the month, but recording every single vafla Mura you buy is outrageous. Yes, you can go without fancy Onda coffee for a long time, yes, you do not need yet another bright scarf, but how far would you go? When are you going to enjoy the simple pleasures of life. My advice is, do not overdo it. I respect people who have spreadsheets and all...those people in my life drive the porches and buy fancy houses on the beach. I, however, enjoy having 4 leva coffee at Onda, and I am not giving it up for yet another pair of fancy shoes.

Very simple rules:
1) Live within your means. No consumer debt. Zilch, none. Think of yourself as a company: a company that uses credit for operating expenses, i.e. digs into borrowed equity to pay for things, goes bankrupt at a vastly high rate than those who finance everything out of cash flow.
2) Rules of thumb work well. Pay more than 25% of your NET income for housing. Save 20% of your NET income in long-term stock market index funds for at least 10 years before diversifying (you're young), pay no more than half of what is left for food. If your budget doesn't fit that, then either get a better-paying job or reduce your life style costs by getting a smaller place.
3) Did I mention NO consumer debt? Zilch, nada. If you need something, you can save for it. I've lived as a student for less than $225/month (this was in the late 1970s) by having a small room in a group house, working at a food co-op to get food at wholesale prices, and by not owning a car or any other device that acts as a savings book with negative cash flow.
4) It's all about self control. If you lack it, then you will have problems. But it's more than that: it's also about resisting what advertisers are selling to you and finding out what you really want, rather than being victim to their marketing schemes. And right now, it sounds like you are.
Petya - I have no wise words, tips or tricks, BUT I totally relate! I have this conversation with myself monthly when the credit card bill arrives.
Off topic, I know, but can I get your help Petya? How easy is it to use debit/credit cards in Sofia/Tarnovo? I am about to go to stay with my boyfriend over there for a month, and I need to know how to set up my money. Neither my boyfriend nor his parents have cards, so they can't really help me.
Petya, I suffer from the same overspending on little things and I recently came across a diet program that confronts the same kind of habit but related to food. It is not a fad diet, but a philosophy of food and the version I found is framed in religious terms, but it's essence is not religious. Here how it works. When you eat, you take plenty of time to enjoy the food, eat slowly and think how delightful, not just delicious, it is. Savor it in all its greatness and with gratitude. And don't start with the least desirable parts of your portion, start with the best. If you feel full afterwards, don't continue eating. If you feel guilty that you are wasting food while the poor children all over the world are going to bed hungry, just put less in your plate next time.
Now I know you don't need any diet, but overspending on those little things is like overindulging on candy, when you don't really do it because you need it but because it is so accessible, looks small and with no immediate consequences. But do you really savor the delight in those little expenses? If you take enough time to really enjoy each one of it the way the food philosophy requires, you will feel more fulfilled about the little pleasures and will need less of them (so, will spend less on them) in the future. Just the way thinking about candy and why you eat it makes you realize what you need it for and whether you actually need it. If you (an abstracted eater, not the actual you) eat more of it because you like the feeling of indulgence you associate with it, why not get more indulgence and enjoyment per candy and hence, eat less candy.
Now I am sure you can write a whole book based on all the advice here. Wink wink.
oh, i wish i could really help. i suppose my only suggestion is that when you take out how much cash you're WILLING to spend, instead of just using the debit card all the time, it helps to actually SEE the money leaving your wallet. but maybe you already do that. ;)
megan: i think i can help you with this one, as i get paid in the states but live in sofia. you will be just fine with a debit/atm card linked to a checking account. you can't use it as a debit card quite as reliably as in the states (not all shops and restaurants accept them, though many do) but you can always use it in one of the many reliable atms.
in other words, you don't need to do anything, other than remember your wallet. hope that helps.
Brooke and I make sure to call each other before we buy anything. While we almost never say no to a request it still makes you stop and think, "Do I really want to call her up and ask for the Greatest Hits of Clarence Carter CD?" If you are too embarrassed to ask, you don't need it. Saves money.

I think that the wide variety of responses I got here only demonstrates that there is no right or wrong way of doing this, what works best is what works for YOU. I have loved different things about y'all's different approaches and I think that we are in agreement here that there is no point in saving just so you can say you have money in the bank.
I personally plan to keep writing on the topic because managing my finances has been that one constant stress-inducer since high-school when I had to hunt my little sister in the hallways and beg for money because I was not able to manage my weekly allowance. I am ready to put all of this behind me and really just stop stressing about it constantly. So, I will be trying all of your tips and advice and if you have more...by all means...do share them!!!

I think you're right, Petya - there's no "wrong" way of managing personal finances. It's a matter of preference and goals.
While the spreadsheets are a great idea, I am in no position to even consider using them right now. I'm on Weight Watchers, which means I track ALL the points of ALL the food I eat EVERY day, plus I'm a grad student who happens to be teaching, taking a full course load and working a second job, which means I have to live by my day planner or else. Just the thought of having to micromanage anything else right now makes me feel like I'm going to break into tears or hives or both.
Everytime I start thinking about buying something I ask myself the questions - do I really need this? Will this be just another rag in my wardrobe or will I really wear it? In the past year and a half (ever since I graduated and started work) my spendable income has increased substantially. It's really tough for someone who has not had the means to afford things they've wanted in the past to stop themeselves from spending every penny that comes in. That's why I think about what my mom can buy with her teacher's salary - guilt is a good trick, as Yana mentioned already :D

Still, my trick. Get your environmental conciousness to work. Just think that all those hair clips and sunglasses and snacks packaging, and snacks themsleves, nice and shiny as they look now, are, in fact, just GARBAGE. One day you will have to throw them away.
