WOW! Where are you from?!

Kyle’s stepdad’s sister went to Paris a couple of years ago. She knows French but had a terrible experience speaking French while in France. She would always try and people would not be able to understand and then everyone would get frustrated. Sometimes people would switch to English, sometimes they would simply ignore her. I am particularly sympathetic to that last bit, because I had a terrible experience during my 24-hour stint in Paris back in September. When I was there, I was in several situations where people had an opportunity to decide whether to be nice or rude to me and ALL of them chose the latter. Anyway.

So, on her last day in Paris, Tom’s sister is sitting in a cafe, sipping some wine when she strikes up a conversation with another woman sitting at the table right next to her. They talk about Paris, the weather, life. They are totally hitting it off. She’s super excited because FINALLY she is able to speak French AND be understood. WOW, she says to the other woman, It was so great to talk to you!!! Where are you from?! The woman takes a sip of her coffee and answers:

Kansas City.

I've had that frustrating experience, too, but, just to be annoying, I'd keep speaking in my horrible French until whoever I was speaking to was forced to answer in French instead of English. Luckily, no one was very rude to me, but this was a few years ago, before the entire world hated the USA.

Fran: do you think it's worse now? I mean...people always say that everyone hates the US now...but I haven't really had a chance to test that for myself...

Ina: I WILL!!! :))))

Ha! When I worked in Pazardjik, my Bulgarian colleague did a great imitation of Americans trying to speak Bulgarian. It was dead on. But the thing was, I could understand his Bulgarian much better when he spoke that way.

Hahhhahaha! Awesome!

When we travel to countries where neither of us speaks the local language, Kyle always lets ME do the speaking. He says that my International English is much better than his.

I think that non-native speakers enunciate much better. What do you think?

Back in 2001 my friends and I had a very similar experience studying abroad in St. Petersburg. A group of us Americans went out to dinner, inviting a Russian friend of Jane's. All night long we chattered away in Russian, following each other to the T and feeling proud of ourselves for keeping our conversation the same pace as it would have been in English. But poor Lena didn't know what the hell we were saying. I guess foreign language learners who speak the same native language tend to make similar mistakes, and thus, are able to follow each other's line of thought better.
