First Gay Pride in Bulgaria
Yes! We are having our very first Gay Pride Parade at the end of this month. It's going to be on June 28, to be precise.
I am both super excited but also extremely worried. The first Gay Pride in neighboring Belgrade, back in 2001, was VERY violent...I believe LGBT organizations there have never been able to organize another parade since then. Also, I've already seen notes from the Bulgarian major nationalist party urging their supporters to organize a counter-protest...At any rate, it is so insane, I am embarrassed to even translate it.
I wonder what to do... Blog about it, talk about, write people, call all my journalist friends and ask them to cover the event...I feel this sense of urgency...like...it's now or never, you know. We either do a good job this time or we fuck things up for people for years to come...
Any ideas?

Wow, I just looked at the pictures from Belgrade... scary stuff. I hope you and Prof. Grady make a point to go and support the parade. Every little bit helps.
Also, I'd love to see your thoughts on why you think this happened in Belgrade (and why you worry it may be repeated in Sofia). Consider this a prompt for another blog!
Yes. We are planning to go. In the last few days we have been busy...doing our part to popularize the event, fighting verbal battles with various idiots on my other blog and also working together with a human rights defense group here in Bulgaria to prevent acts of violence at the actual event.
Have been finding all kinds of violent, homophobic messages on various message boards. But turns out, there is no such thing as "hate speech" in Bulgaria... so there is not that much one can do prior to something bad happening.

Funny that you said: there is no such thing as "hate speech" in Bulgaria. I know what you mean, of course, which is that "hate speech" isn't recognized as such in Bulgaria, or that it hasn't yet risen to the level of something-that-can-be-named-as-a-problem. As we philosophers would say: it's not yet "thetic."
But still, your comment seems to me on the same level as Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's remark that "there are no homosexuals in Iran"!
Petya, thanks for the link... I just checked the photos from Belgrade -- not surprising, yet disturbing.
I hope there will be no violence in Sofia, but you never know.

Nothing wrong being a gay i guess, but I'm concerned they are allowed to adopt children in some countries. Now... that is wrong .

Well, Jorro boy, I am Martin, Bulgaran gay and I am asking: What the hell would be so wrong of me adopiting a child? Why not? Why do heterosexuals have this right and me not? But please, really think about it, because I am not sure you really did....
I don't think there will be physical violence during the Bulgarian gay parade. It is not a violent society. Verbal aggression is possible, though. My boyfriend and I may come to see how things are going - after all, this event will be the first of its kind in Bulgaria.

Wow, the first Gay Pride Parade in Bulgaria! I'm very impressed... I happen to be in the country, but I'm going to be in Samokov on Sat. I wish I could change that and come and support the parade, but it won't be possible.
I would like to help in any way possible, please let me know what I can do to promote tolerance and peace around the event, and about gay rights in Bulgaria in general. I am often online and can help you talk with the homophobes (I have a lot of patience).
I was thinking it would be cool if I could make leaflets promoting the OK-ness of non-heterosexuality and stick them up and otherwise distribute them around Sofia while I am here (not for very long, I'll admit). That way people will be exposed to the idea, and will be forced to think about it.
I am only just learning about gay rights organisations in Bulgaria and don't know any websites or addresses - perhaps you can direct me?
I hang around a lot of non-hetero ppl in Sydney, Aus, and would like to do what I can to help Bulgaria become a more tolerant and open-minded society, so if you can give me any ideas on how I can help, please let me know. :o)

P.P.S. You should know that, whatever happens, at least brave people put themselves out there and made a stand. No doubt there will be hostile reactions from some quarters, but at least Gay and Lesbian people will be putting forth a voice. They won't be invisible.

epiphany, have u ever tried to speak to a neo-nazi skinhead? i have and i can assure you that most of these people simply can't speak. they produce only sounds or they operate vocabs containing less than 100 words. if they could speak, they wouldnt be throwing molotovs at the peaceful parade. unfortunately, the only language they understand is the language of violence.
if u ask me, there are only two ways of directly helping fascists:
1. prevention - including solid education in social sciences and emphasis on history of ideas and reflexivity for the "hard sciences" in schools where it is made clear that there is no such thing as 'race' and that fascism is false consciousness and so on; and, if it's too late for prevention
2. warfare (ideological - less effective; physical - still less effective because it brutalizes them even more). however, sometimes i think that once you subject a racist to racism and physical abuse maybe they will start seeing the world differently. i regret to say that because, as an anthropologist, i am usually against violence. but sometimes i realize that even ideologies of non-violence have their limits.
in any case, these people won't disappear even if we put all of them to death or something because the factors that produce them and the social contexts they are embedded in will keep producing them. for instance, they are (in)directly supported by the nation-state and the operations of capitalism(s), so warring directly with fascists won't take us far yet it can be fun sometimes.
i have started my little ideological war in my blog now; trying to change long outdated notions of culture, race and nation but to no avail yet. the only response from skinheads i get doesnt merit mention here.
i think neo-nazi and similar idiocy will disappear with inequality and exploitation, not only by changing people's minds, thou that's certainly very important

Education needs to come through the TV. Years of hatred of minorities can be overcome but it will take more than one Roma transvestite pop star, it will take good well written, popular films, plays and commedy. For years. Bulgaria changed it's law on homosexuality a year after the UK. Come on writers......
